I usually write an Emmy Nom newsletter but this year, as I was typing out those names, I just……………..sigh. Essentially three programs are nominated in every category: Severance, The Studio, and The White Lotus. Another program leading the charge is The Last of Us. Now, I did watch the first season of this show when it aired. I knew nothing about the game but then I learned that it is essentially Zionist propaganda and I was no longer interested in watching. I really, really, really, really don’t want to hear those acceptance speeches1. Ditto for The Handmaid’s Tale, a program based on a novel by a vile woman named Margaret Atwood2, and lead by a Scientologist named Elisabeth Moss. “Let people enjoy things!” okay well I enjoy never forgiving and never forgetting. Truly, though, I’m not saying that watching tv or not watching tv is praxis, but I miss discernment. Not everything is good or worthy of your time, especially when they are making! money! from! your! views!
As far as The White Lotus goes, this season was! not! good! I am thrilled to see an Emmy nomination for Aimee Lou Wood, but it should’ve been for Sex Education. Her performance in that show was breathtaking, funny, and earnest. Real ones know it’s just a stupid bus.

I have not tuned into The Studio and I don’t think I care enough to? Jamie Lee Curtis continues to pull nominations for The Bear, a program with many other good performances but somehow the wicked continue to thrive. Curdled cream rises to the top, I guess? This goes for Jon Bernthal, too.3 Of course, I am thrilled to see Liza Colón-Zayas receive another nomination for her incredible performance as Tina, as well as Ayo Edebiri for both acting AND directing on The Bear.

I have watched most of Paradise, but then we were moving across the country and did not have internet for a while (thanks for nothing ROGERS). I will say, though, Sterling K. Brown manages an incredible performance despite some of the cringe dialogue/plot. One of the greatest actors of our time!!! And if I’ve said it once I’ve said it 100000000 times: James Marsden should have the career one of these other yahoos has — he can sing, he’s charming, he’s not over 6-feet, he can do comedy AND drama. So……??????
As a Two Dope Queens fan, I am thrilled to see Jessica Williams continue to thrive. Emmy Winner Jessica Williams has a nice ring to it. Despite the fact that Apple rarely promotes all their shows, Presumed Innocent was VERY watchable. Ruth Negga is often excluded from these Go Ireland!! round-ups at Award Season and it is unforgivable because she is an incredible actor. I watched Adolescence before I realized that Brad Pitt’s company, Plan B, was at the scene of the crime.4 The performances in the show were excellent. I hate Brad Pitt.
Speaking of hate….Ryan Murphy’s disgusting program Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story nabbed a few noms. Ick. HOW?????????????? Even if you do not care about the politics of it, was this a “good” program?!? Because it did not even LOOK good. WHERE. IS. DISCERNMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am thrilled to see so many nominations for The Pitt!!!!!! Including Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, and Shawn Hatosy, as well as Writing, Directing, and Outstanding Drama Series. Interesting news on the heels of learning that our beloved Dr. Heather Collins, played by Tracy Ifeachor, will not be returning for Season 2. There have been a few rumours around this, but it seems like those have just been noise and it is really about plot/scheduling. I do wish that some other cast members received nominations, including Ifeachor, whose character was instrumental to the season, as well as: Taylor Deardon, Shabana Azeez, and Supriya Ganesh. Maybe Fiona Dourif, too. If they can nominate everybody from The Studio or White Lotus, they can give more to The Pitt!! We’ll see what happens with The Golden Globes and the SAG Awards.

But perhaps the most exciting nomination of all, the one that made all of the nonsense worth it: Jeff Hiller for Somebody Somewhere, as well as a writing nomination for Hannah Bos, Paul Thureen, and Bridget Everett. This show is perfect and Jeff Hiller’s performance was a tour-de-force, says ME. He balances being incredibly funny, tender, genuine, and forthright as Joel. I will keep rewatching this show through laughter and tears. It is phenomenal. Need him to win. Need his speech. Needed at least one more season of this show.

Even when I’m behind on my shows, I love good television! Who doesn’t?! Well, a lot of people, based on some of these nominations…………
While I’m already in your inbox:
I promise I will return to my SATC rewatch, if you even care! Since we were moving I was not emotionally ready to watch some of those emotional final episodes. But I’m stronger now *wipes away a single tear*. (I also have another dissertation chapter due before the end of summer, a postdoctoral fellowship application due in early September, and I am trying to enjoy my new home and reveal in the beauty of the ocean and being alive, etc. etc. etc.)
I’ve been watching a lot of Living Single because I bought the series and I think it is clear that Synclaire and Overton are the greatest sitcom couple of all time. I will not elaborate.
The trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s After The Hunt has dropped. Much to consider!
I fear there will just be too much irony in the winners and what they might say. A reminder: Queer people are being slaughtered in Palestine, funded by the west that is absolutely not a beacon of safety for Queer & trans people but loves to pretend otherwise when it comes to global politics.
Victim blaming during #MeToo; TERF tendencies.
Abuse apologist.
While I understand that Plan B has produced some good things in the past — including one of my favourite films, Moonlight — it seems like a lot of the projects produces during this era of knowing Brad Pitt’s abuse have been intentionally about misogyny and violence against women. You can produce all the TV and films you want, Brad, it won’t erase the bruises you’ve left behind. Loser.
Yes one million times for Jeff Hiller! Also his book looks INCREDIBLE (and I mean looks as in the cover/title is perfection). Also, Living Single!!!!! Already voting for it as a follow up to the SATC recaps or at least worthy of its own newsletter sometime in the future post-exhaustion.
I do care!!! About the satc rewatch series!! Pls continue! Also the studio is not v good imo so kind of shocked to hear they got a lot of noms??
